The same can’t be said of CVs because (A) CVs (and the companies/writers who create them) range from the atrocious to the sublime, and (B) inevitably this impacts results – for better or worse (sometimes dramatically).
Judgment obstacles
If companies, their products and results differ greatly, then pretty much by default any comparisons can never be like-for-like.
Moreover, if, on top of this, there is also a dichotomy in terms of the honesty and integrity of CV sector companies (and there most certainly is!) then this muddies the water further still for those trying to fathom which companies are ‘honest and outstanding’ and which are, in reality, just average and (let’s put it politely) ‘less than honest.’

Many people, already know that (A) a quality CV is an investment and (B) there are good and bad firms in any sector. Despite this, many still struggle to spot the good from the bad.
Why
Quite simply lesser firms are often far better at sales pitches than they are at writing CVs, while honest, top-quality firms don’t resort to underhand tactics.
It’s a sad fact, but many people are drawn more by things such as fantastical claims and unverifiable statistics than they are by honesty, transparency and integrity.

Many “professional” CV firms draw from a pool of freelancers (not necessarily specialist writers), of unknown origins, qualifications and ‘talent’. Frequently, the end product can look quite neat, but as most firms often produce it quickly by rehashing the original content into flawed formats, it tends not to make much difference to applications when unleased back on the job market.
It’s one reason why many who opt for cheaper alternatives inevitably scrap their first “professional” CV and subsequently engage what they perceive to be a higher-quality firm.
Significantly, note the phrase ‘what they perceive to be.’ It’s important, because some people flit from one run-of-the-mill company to other run-of-the-mill companies. While it is true that genuine top CV writers aren’t cheap, price alone isn’t a guarantee of quality. Indeed, even some dearer firms produce some very average CVs!
Notably, even when professionals do subsequently ‘upgrade’ their CV to a (genuinely) better one, they tend not to upgrade it straightaway. Usually there is a period of trying out their initial CV in the job market first. Frequently this is a few months, but in some cases, it’s several years of missing out on good, well-paid jobs with a CV that isn’t doing them justice.
What’s the deal?
Going down the cheaper route first sounds (and usually is) a false economy, but many people (some intelligent senior professionals included) are wooed by sharp salespeople and the prospect of a ‘good deal’ – even though in the world of CVs there is no such thing as a “deal” – either your CV works, or it doesn’t. If it doesn’t (as many don’t – and especially for competitive top jobs), then no matter how much you’ve (supposedly) “saved,” it’s not a ‘saving’, or a ‘deal’ – it just means the nice, friendly salesperson who wooed you has sold you a dud.
How do you know?
It’s a very good question, and a really important point that goes under the radar!
Most people don’t truly know what makes for a great CV and what doesn’t. There are numerous reasons for this, but for the sake of brevity here let’s just keep it on ‘in a nutshell’ terms and say that most people (again many intelligent senior professionals included), think that if their CV looks neat and includes achievements and details of their experience then that’s (A) all they need do, and (B) it’s as good as it gets.
The fact that point (A) is nonsense and point (B) is ludicrous completely bypasses many. As such, as long as a firm (including firms with flawed methods and substandard products) gives customers something that includes achievements, summarises their experience and looks neat, then not only are they perfectly satisfied with that, but they also mistakenly believe that their new CV couldn’t be better still – let alone dramatically better and far more powerful!
So don’t people know how much better their CV could be?
